This Earth Day, Youth4CAN engaged learners from Omukwiyugwemanya Secondary School into an awareness day of the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment and engaged them in their first school planting day by planting 10 (ten) fruit trees around the school ground. Tree planted include three (3) Mangoes, two (2) Guavas and two (2) lemons. Fruit tree planting as an environmentally friendly initiative is believed to steward individuals and communities with an added source of income and nutrition, helping food security and livelihoods and in this regards it encourages them to continuously water their plants for fruit bearing and in turn support with carbon sequestration to curb carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.
As a proposed initiative by Youth4CAN Oshikoto Regional members, Earth Day also incorporated preparation for World Environment Day by engaging the school’s Environmental Club to amplify awareness and learners-led activities for environmental protection. Youth4CAN donated a hamper to the Omukwiyugwemanya’s Environmental Club with contents of materials for their activity plannings and snack packs for their meetings.
As a youth network committed to “promote radical youth-led climate actions”, Youth4CAN believes in inclusivity and partnerhsip in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and in more so amplify education for sustainable development across all 14 regions of Namibia. A great shout out to our active Oshikoto Regional members Mr. Enkono Johannes and Ms. Ndapandula Efolo for leading this initiative.
