The world commemorates World Environment Day every year on 5th June, as a dedicated day to campaign and amplify the importance of protecting our environment and caring for ecosystems to prevent them from deteriorating as well as preserve its resources from depleting while protecting them for the now and future generations.
This year’s World Environment Day campaign focused on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
Youth4CAN marked the day with a swift program at Omukwigwemanya Secondary School in Oshikoto Region. In partnership with the school’s Environment Club, the youth network commemorated World Environment Day through awareness of the importance of caring for our environment and the impacts pollution has on the health and wellbeing of its people. Learners also shared poems and displayed their plaques to the environment; this was followed by a debate competition that was held to prepare learners for public speaking and sharpen their engagements in controversial topics related to environmental protection and climate action. The was held under the debate motion: This house believes Education is essential for effective land restoration and drought resilience.
This initiative was jointly supported by the Oshikoto Youth4CAN members having shared in the program and activity development as well as support with activity implementation. Therefore, Youth4CAN would like to especially thank Mr. Johannes Enkno and Ms. Ndapandula Efolo for their dedication and the successful coordination of this event as Youth4CAN Oshikoto Regional members.
