Organised by the Eros Girls School, Youth4CAN’s Khomas Regional Coordinator Ms. Petrina Imanuel and the network’s member Mr. Madhiya Matheus Taapopi joined the network’s Director Ms. Toini Amutenya for the handover of cleaning materials, clean-up and awareness campaign to promote environmental health practices and encourage young girls at Eros Girls’ School to keep their environment clean by avoiding littering.
The campaign that was held in Windhoek, Namibia at the Eros Girls’ School on 24 August 2024 presented an opportunity for the network to engage with young girls on the importance of keeping our environments clean by engaging them in fun presentations on the reality of litter, solutions and benefits and, the best way forward. The awareness and capacity-building session also included fun activities which propelled the girls to engage and present their ideas for tackling litter issues within their school grounds.
Despite the need to start with ourselves to set good examples for others, some of the solutions proposed by the girls included: Setting up more rubbish bins around the school grounds, hosting more awareness and fun engagement campaigns, changing attitudes and adding value to waste. The learners also encouraged to us their voices and good examples as a first step to ensuring their environment remains clean and conducive to live and play.
During the Campaign, Youth4CAN handed over a donation of masks, refuse collection bags and gloves for the activities of the clean-up campaign before joining the learners in the activities.
The session started with a clean-up campaign and proceeded to capacity-building and, was concluded with waste value education of which the school’s environmental club lead Ms. Maria Tobias looks forward to collecting plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and paper for recycling purposes and, food waste for compost making for their small garden, which already had a few spinach saplings at the time of our visit.
Youth4CAN remains grateful to the Eros Girls School management for inviting us to share into their day, our donors who ensured that we could extend our hands through on-granting especially to the Climate Development and Knowledge Network, our members and regional coordinators and, to the Eros enthusiastic girls for giving us a great welcome, their engagement and positive drive towards the future.
